National Instruments PCI-6503

The National Instruments PCI-6503 is a high-performance digital I/O device designed for seamless integration with PCI bus computers. This 24-bit board features a single 82C55A programmable peripheral interface (PPI) chip that supports unidirectional, handshaking, and bidirectional operation, along with the capability to issue interrupt requests directly to the host system. The device offers extensive versatility with 24 TTL-compatible bidirectional digital I/O channels, all accessed via a 50-pin male connector.

The PCI-6503 is a fully jumpless and switchless data acquisition (DAQ) solution that automatically allocates all resources at startup, eliminating the need for manual configuration of base addresses or interrupt levels. It is suitable for various applications, including production and laboratory testing as well as process control. The device achieves impressive transfer rates, with a maximum throughput of 50 kbytes per second, and a typical sustainable data rate ranging from 1 to 10 bytes per second, leveraging NI-DAQ software.

With input logic high voltage levels ranging from 2.2 V (min) to 5.3 V (max) and low levels between -0.3 V (min) and 0.8 V (max), the PCI-6503 can handle output signals up to 1.0 A through Pin 49 at +5 V. Typical output current draw is approximately 2.5 mA. Power requirements include 400 mA at +5 VDC (±5%), with I/O connector power levels maintained between +4.65 to +5.25 V.

The device is compatible with various application development environments, including LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI, and Measurement Studio. The PCI-6503 is compact, weighing only 1.9 oz and measuring 4.8 x 3.7 in. It operates effectively within a temperature range of 0 °C to 55 °C and can withstand storage temperatures from -20 °C to 70 °C. The board is designed to endure operational and nonoperational random vibrations of 0.31 grms and 2.5 grms, respectively, across a frequency range of 5 to 500 Hz.
