The National Instruments GPIB-232CV-A is a high-performance GPIB-to-RS-232 converter designed for seamless data translation between GPIB and RS-232 interfaces. This device operates transparently, eliminating the need for special commands or control codes. Equipped with a 256 kilobyte RAM buffer and Direct Memory Access (DMA), the GPIB-232CV-A enhances system efficiency by offloading the host computer during communications, making it ideal for applications involving plotters and printers. It supports RS-232 data transfer rates of up to 38.4 kb/s, facilitating reliable communication between devices.

Featuring a compact design, this converter includes a front panel power switch and indication LEDs, with standard connectors placed on the rear panel. The GPIB-232CV-A is compatible with virtually all PCs and allows users to connect a GPIB controller to any RS-232 enabled instrument, as well as integrating IEEE 488 (GPIB) devices with a compatible PC or laptop. Data can be transferred in both directions, and the device is capable of operating in either controller mode or device mode. In device mode, it functions as a slave under another GPIB controller, while in controller mode, it assumes direct control over connected GPIB devices.

The GPIB-232CV-A is available in two configurations: an AC version with dimensions of 3.0 x 1.1 x 4.7 inches and a DC version sized at 3.0 x 1.7 x 4.7 inches, both weighing 12 ounces. The recommended operating temperature range is from 10 to 40 °C, with storage temperatures ranging from 0 to 70 °C. Although the GPIB-232CV-A has been designated as obsolete by National Instruments, it remains available for purchase and repair through Apex Waves.
