The National Instruments PXI-8171 series of embedded computers offers a robust solution for industrial automation as system controllers compatible with CompactPCI and PXI standards. This series includes three distinct configurations: NI-8176, NI-8175, and NI-8174, each tailored to meet varying performance needs. The PXI-8171 series features conventional I/O connections such as video, USB, Ethernet, RS-232 serial, and parallel ports, along with PS/2 mouse and keyboard connectors, a reset button, and PXI trigger support. The NI-8176 model is equipped with a powerful 1.26 GHz Intel Pentium III processor, an integrated floppy drive, multiple serial ports, a PCI-based GPIB controller, and a minimum of 10 GB hard drive capacity. The NI-8175 variant operates at 866 MHz with similar standard I/O capabilities, while the NI-8174 utilizes a 566 MHz CPU with all essential I/O features.

Constructed in a compact 3U PXI form factor, the PXI-8171 series employs modular PC architecture, integrating various logic blocks including the Watchdog Timer for system management, and connectivity options for video and memory. The series supports PXI-1020 and PXI-1025 chassis, ensuring compatibility and flexibility in system design. Each controller comes pre-installed with essential software, including NI-DAQ for data acquisition, NI-VISA for instrument communication, and LabVIEW and Measurement Studio for programming and control tasks. Data storage options encompass an internal IDE hard drive, a 1.44 MB floppy disk, and USB storage support. Additionally, a bundled recovery CD provides methods for restoring the system to its original state via CD-ROM or network recovery, ensuring reliability and maintainability in automated environments.
