The National Instruments PXI-5402 is a high-performance PXI waveform generator specifically engineered for automated test and measurement applications, featuring a maximum bandwidth of 20 MHz. This versatile device utilizes advanced direct digital synthesis (DDS) technology combined with a 14-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC) to produce accurate and low-distortion waveforms. The PXI-5402 is capable of generating a variety of standard waveform types, including sine, square, triangle, and ramp signals, as well as DC outputs and pseudorandom noise. Its output voltage capabilities reach ±5 V (ACpk + DC), with amplitude ranges of 5.64 mVpk-pk to 10 Vpk-pk for 50 Ω loads, and 11.28 mVpk-pk to 20 Vpk-pk for high-impedance loads.

The device supports software-selectable output impedance configurations of 50 Ω or 75 Ω and offers adjustable phase settings ranging from -180° to +180°, ensuring flexibility in testing applications. Additionally, multiple PXI-5402 units can be synchronized to generate complex signals through waveform summation. It provides a frequency resolution of 0.355 μHz and allows for a maximum sample rate of 400 MS/s for sine, square, and user-defined waveforms, while ramp, triangle, and noise signals can attain a maximum sample rate of 100 MS/s.

Synchronization functionality is incorporated through SYNC OUT/PFI 0 and PFI 1 ports, supporting diverse trigger modes including single, continuous, stepped, and burst options. The PXI-5402 serves both as a trigger source and receiver with minimum pulse widths of 25 ns, achieving low jitter specifications. It guarantees compatibility with external systems through dedicated input and output connectors for synchronization and reference, along with maximum input overload protection of ±10 V (ACpk + DC). Input voltage levels vary, accommodating square waveforms from 0.2 Vpk-pk to 2.8 Vpk-pk and sine waves from 0.63 Vpk-pk to 2.8 Vpk-pk.
