The NI PXI-6683 is an advanced Timing and Synchronization Module designed to enhance the synchronization capabilities of PXI and PXI Express systems. This module utilizes GPS, IEEE 1588, and IRIG B protocols to carry out precise synchronous events, enabling the creation of time signals and event timestamps accurately aligned with the system's framework time. The PXI-6683 is equipped with a temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO) that can be disciplined to maintain long-term stability through synchronization with GPS, IEEE 1588, and IRIG B sources. This module also supports the routing of clock signals and triggers with minimal skew, facilitating synchronization across multiple devices within a PXI setup, whether inside the same chassis or between different chassis.

Featuring a single RJ-45 port for Ethernet communication, the PXI-6683 automatically negotiates the optimal communication speed of 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps, or 1000 Mbps, with the option for software-controlled auto-negotiation. Its auto-MDI capability eliminates the need for crossover cabling, simplifying connectivity with other network cards, as it can automatically determine and adjust for crossed connections internally. The Ethernet port supports full duplex communication, allowing simultaneous transmission and reception of data. The module provides up to 13 PXI star triggers per chassis, maintaining a strict propagation delay of no more than 1 ns for optimal performance, with typical skew limitations of 500 ps within NI PXI chassis. Users can direct low skew triggers from any PFI line to the PXI_Star lines, further enhancing system synchronization.
