The National Instruments PXI-2596 is an advanced PXI RF Multiplexer Switch Module designed for efficiently routing RF and microwave signals in automated test environments. With a switching capacity of up to 26.5 GHz, the PXI-2596 integrates multiple functionalities, including a multiplexer, SPDT relay, and transfer switch, all within a single platform. This module utilizes high-performance microwave relays from Radiall, achieving less than 1 dB insertion loss at frequencies up to 26.5 GHz, thus minimizing any adverse effects on the testing setup and ensuring signal integrity across lower frequencies as well. The PXI-2596 is particularly suited for high-order harmonic routing in conjunction with RF upconverters, such as the NI PXI-5671 vector signal generator, and for directing signals to RF downconverters like the NI PXI-5660 vector signal analyzer.

To facilitate configuration and control, engineers can leverage NI Switch Executive 2.1, which provides enhanced features for Excel integration, RF switching management, and switch system diagnostics. The software allows for tailored access to settings for individual switch paths, enabling the storage of RF path calibration and related data to improve the overall accuracy of testing systems. Additionally, the new software configuration interface allows users to define and arrange their virtual device within various programming environments, such as NI TestStand, NI LabVIEW, NI LabWindows/CVI, and Microsoft Excel. The capability to import existing switch route records from Excel streamlines the maintenance and modification process.

Physically, the PXI-2596 measures 8.5 inches in length, 1.6 inches in width, and 5.1 inches in height, occupying two slots in a 3U PXI chassis. Constructed from gold-plated beryllium copper, it has a weight of 13.8 ounces. The module operates under PXI power requirements of 2.5 W at 3.3 V, 1 W at 5 V, and 6 W at 12 V. Its operational temperature range extends from 0 °C to 55 °C, while it can be stored between -40 °C and 70 °C.
