National Instruments PCI-6040E

The National Instruments PCI-6040E is a multifunction data acquisition (DAQ) device designed for versatile performance and high-speed data processing. This card features 16 analog input channels with a 12-bit resolution, capable of sampling at rates up to 500 kS/s for single-channel applications and 250 kS/s in multichannel configurations. The device supports continuous data streaming to disk at rates of up to 250 kS/s, subject to the hard drive specifications. It includes two analog output channels that provide 12-bit resolution with a maximum data transfer rate of 1 MS/s, alongside 8 digital I/O lines that are compatible with 5 V TTL and CMOS logic levels.

The PCI-6040E is equipped with two 24-bit counter/timer I/O lines operating at a frequency of 20 MHz, allowing for precise timing and measurement capabilities. The output signal SCANCLK generates pulses shortly after an A/D conversion begins, which can be programmed to synchronize with external multiplexers. Additionally, the EXTSTROBE output signal can produce single or multiple pulses in hardware strobe mode, with programmable timing options.

For connectivity, the device utilizes a 68-pin male D-type I/O connector and operates with a power requirement of +5 VDC at 1.0 A. It incorporates a dedicated 700 MHz Pentium III processor, 32 MB of user-defined DRAM, and 32 MB of onboard CompactFlash memory, offering a maximum PID loop rate of 26 kHz. The compact design measures 6.9 x 4.2 inches and weighs 4.1 oz. Although National Instruments has announced the end of life status for the PCI-6040E, it remains available for purchase and repair through Apex Waves.
