Description

The National Instruments OP-8940 is a highly versatile 32-channel Pass-Through Fault Insertion Module designed for use with the NI SLSC-12001 platform, specifically for hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing applications. This module features feed-through channels that enable the simulation of open and broken connections in switch, load, and signal conditioning (SLSC) modules. It supports extensive fault injection capabilities, allowing users to create shorts between pins, shorts to battery voltages, and shorts to ground, making it suitable for a wide range of testing scenarios.

The OP-8940 is equipped with 112 independently programmable relays, with seven relays dedicated to fault injection for each pair of two signals. The board architecture consists of two sets of eight differential channels or sixteen single-ended channels, each structured to facilitate fault insertion, ensuring robust testing capability. Featuring a streamlined configuration with front interface connectors on one side and SLSC backplane connectors on the other, the OP-8940 integrates seamlessly with existing PXI or CompactRIO modules via compatible terminal blocks, cables, and rear transition interfaces (RTIs).

This module's relay technology delivers impressive density and rapid response times of less than 0.5 ms. However, it is vital for users to manage peak currents by incorporating appropriate resistors in their circuits, as current levels can spike up to 5A before tripping the internal limit, which could damage the relays. In the event of a relay failure, repair options are available, including an RMA process, and personnel with valid IPC-610 certification can perform repairs through lead-free no-clean soldering as needed. Overall, the OP-8940 combines flexibility and efficiency, making it an essential tool for comprehensive fault simulation and testing.
