The National Instruments PXI-8463/1 is a specialized CAN network interface designed for seamless integration within PXI systems, featuring a single-cable architecture that connects the CAN controller to the physical bus cables. This interface incorporates the PCI and PXI physical layers, enabling robust communication while being powered through an onboard DC-DC converter. An essential feature of the PXI-8463/1 is its optical isolation capability of up to 500 V, which provides critical protection for both NI-CAN equipment and the host PC against voltage surges within the CAN bus. The device supports the Philips SJA1000 CAN controller, which adheres to ISO 11898 standards and facilitates additional functionalities such as listen-only mode, sleep/wake-up mode, and access to error counters.

Included with this model is the National Instruments CAN Device Simulator, which serves as an educational tool for demonstrating CAN communication and synchronization with data acquisition (DAQ) systems. This simulator is equipped with a high-speed CAN interface, a rapid CAN monitor connector, and a 68-pin DAQ connector, along with access to TRIG1, TRIG2, and FREQOUT pins, as well as programmable input switches. Although the PXI-8463/1 has been placed in obsolete status by National Instruments, it remains available for purchase and repair through Apex Waves.
