Panel building guide
Poles, amp and horsepower ratings, enclosure type and code requirements: what to check before you pick a control panel disconnect switch.
Get a Quote Shop Altech KEM325ULShort answer: Match the switch to your supply (number of poles and voltage), size it for the load (amp rating, and horsepower rating for motor circuits), pick an enclosure rating that fits the environment, and confirm the UL listing allows the use you have in mind. Then make sure the handle locks in the OFF position for lockout/tagout.
Every control panel needs a way to cut power safely before someone opens it up or works on the machine it feeds. An enclosed disconnect switch does that job as a standalone unit: the switch mechanism comes already housed in its own enclosure, ready to mount on the panel, the machine frame or the wall next to a motor.
If you're building panels this quarter, the Altech KEM325UL is a UL-listed, 3-pole enclosed disconnect we keep in stock. But the right switch depends on your circuit, so here's how to work through the choice.
A disconnect switch opens all the ungrounded conductors feeding a panel or load, so the equipment downstream is isolated from the supply. It's the point where maintenance staff turn power off, lock it off and tag it before they work.
That's why the disconnect shows up in the main standards panel builders work to:
Which requirements apply to your build depends on the machine, the installation and the local authority having jurisdiction, so treat this guide as a starting point and confirm against the current code editions.
There are two common ways to put a disconnect on a control panel, and they solve slightly different problems.
| Type | How it mounts | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Enclosed disconnect | Self-contained switch in its own housing. Mounts on a wall, machine frame or the outside of a panel. | Local disconnect beside a motor, pump or fan; adding a disconnect to an existing panel without cutting the door; small standalone machines. |
| Through-door (panel-mount) disconnect | Switch body mounts inside the panel; the handle goes through the door, usually with a door interlock. | Main disconnect on a new panel, where the door shouldn't open while power is on. |
Enclosed disconnects are popular with OEMs and maintenance teams because there's no door drilling or shaft alignment, and they can be placed exactly where the "within sight" requirement needs them.
UL-listed, 3-pole, enclosed and ready to mount. Ships with the rest of your Altech panel order.
These are the ratings you'll see most often on enclosed disconnects in industrial plants.
| Rating | Protects against | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|
| NEMA 1 | Contact with live parts, falling dirt | Clean, dry indoor areas |
| NEMA 3R | Rain, sleet, ice formation on the enclosure | Outdoor equipment, rooftop units |
| NEMA 4 | Hose-directed water, windblown dust, rain | Washdown areas, indoor or outdoor |
| NEMA 4X | Everything NEMA 4 covers, plus corrosion | Food and beverage, chemical, wastewater, coastal sites |
| NEMA 12 | Dust, lint, fibers, dripping non-corrosive liquids and oil | Machine shops and general manufacturing floors |
IP ratings (like IP65) describe dust and water protection only. NEMA ratings also cover things like corrosion and ice, so a NEMA rating can be converted to an IP equivalent but not the other way around.

Building a full panel? Our guide to control panel anatomy walks through the other components, and we stock Altech terminal blocks, jumpers, fuse blocks and TS35 DIN rail in bulk so you can order everything in one go.
For industrial machinery, NFPA 79 calls for a supply circuit disconnecting means, and the NEC requires disconnects for motors and controllers. The exact requirement depends on the equipment and installation, so confirm with your engineer or local inspector.
A fused disconnect includes fuse holders, so it isolates the circuit and provides overcurrent protection in one unit. A non-fused disconnect only isolates; protection has to come from a breaker or fuses elsewhere in the circuit.
Often yes, using two of the three poles, but check the manufacturer's wiring instructions and ratings for single-phase use before you do.
Under the NEC, "within sight" generally means visible from the motor and no more than 50 feet away. There are exceptions, so check the current code for your situation.
The Altech KEM325UL is in stock with a 2-year warranty and same-day shipping. Send us your specs and we'll confirm the right switch for your panel.
